Growing in a Greenhouse
October 25, 2018
The ground was dusty and the air was bone dry.
Midafternoon dense with heat,
Smoky with the chance of ash.
Fires blazed in hills nearby.
Engulfed in heat, I tired from merely walking
I made my way to the three greenhouses
Just past the fire station on the left.
I remember as a child realizing they were alive like me.
Though they don’t use hands and brains to be.
Plants don’t judge, lie, cheat or manipulate.
Rather they do their best at being just the way they are.
Sounds so basic, right?
They are only here to live and shine the essence of who they truly are.
Plants embody beauty by just being.
Simply surrounded in now.
Authentically individual.
No need for pretense or wish to hide.
No wasted time trying to do it for anyone else.
Just surrendering to the present over and over again.
Maybe humans need to spend more time with plants.
Plants don’t learn poor behavior.
Each one merely seeks to dwell in necessary comfort.
Moist air fresh with the bouquet of damp soil.
Petals perhaps even eager to attract and draw in a meal.
The intent of some is to look just so, bold in pure glamor.
Eagerly anticipating pollination.
All for the sake of desire to exist.
Amazing botanical creations,
Each with similar intent.
Somehow they all manage to get along.
Especially given favorable conditions.
Again, just like us human creatures.
Blossoming, growing, stretching and reaching beyond what was once familiar.
New ground.
Transformation.
New leaves.
Bone dry hot air and a supple tropical oasis.
Yet another wonderful juxtaposition brought to us by planet earth.
She offers us bounty and beauty and we bicker and pillage.
Bizarre behavior we have picked up along our evolutionary way.
Instead let’s embrace and luxuriate in love with plants other sentient beings.
In awe of the absolute beauty that we have in front of us.
Each day we have opportunities to open our petals to love and understanding.
Let’s be like those plants that put their energy into being amazing.
Each unlike one another in endless ways.
Yet linked and alike in the ways that really matter.
That evening I was extra grateful for the Delta breeze.
Botanical imagery vined through my mind.
Resting in appreciation of worldly diversity,
Botanical and otherwise.
Longing for worldwide metamorphosis.
Also, happy for a good night sleep,
And an awesome and informative visit to the middle greenhouse behind me,
With more to come.
