The shower will run from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Empower Yolo’s D Street House at the corner of Fifth and D streets in downtown Davis. Everyone in the community is invited to bring a new gift for the shelter and enjoy refreshments.
Staff members will be available to answer questions about the services the agency provides to families seeking safety.
All donations are tax-deductible.
Empower Yolo, a nonprofit organization, has provided comprehensive services to abused women and children in Yolo County for the past 40 years. In 2018, we reported that 286 domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking survivors received shelter or transitional housing for 22,333 bed nights.
“When you support Empower Yolo, you are providing someone another opportunity for a new life,” says Sonia Jimenez, the agency’s shelter director. “The shelter empowers victims to become survivors. Staying at the shelter has a deep impact on families because we treat them with lots of love and care,” she adds.
Although Empower Yolo has grant money for specific programs serving abused women and children, the grants cannot be used to pay for shelter supplies, maintenance and repairs, personal items, clothing or toys for the children.
That’s why the Friends of Empower Yolo are sponsoring the shower. The most needed new gifts include:
- Flashlights and batteries;
- Large clear Sterilite storage bins with lids;
- Family-sized shampoo and conditioner;
- New standard pillows;
- Full- and twin-size sheet sets (sheets and pillow cases);
- Comforters and warm throws, any size;
- Sets of matching bath towels, hand towels and wash cloths;
- Personal-care items;
- Gift Cards at local groceries, dept stores, and gas stations.
Monetary donations may be made via Empower Yolo’s secure online donation page (“Become A Donor”) at www.empoweryolo.org.
Checks and gifts may also be sent or delivered to the business office at Empower Yolo, 175 Walnut St., Woodland, CA 96595. Please indicate that the donation is for Shower for the Shelter.
