(From press release) He’s spent the past 51 years chronicling life in Davis, sharing his opinions, prompting us to examine ours and reflecting on all that makes this town the special place it is.
Now, it’s Davis’ turn to show its admiration and respect for Bob Dunning with a springtime celebration in honor of his 51 years at The Davis Enterprise.
Dunning was hired by The Enterprise on Jan. 27, 1970, as a sports writer, and he remembers being terrified of deadlines as he sat down at his typewriter that first day on the job. Now, tens of thousands of deadlines later, he confesses that he never really wanted to be a journalist but admits that he wouldn’t trade his time in newspapers for anything.
“I celebrate the truly great and talented journalists I’ve been blessed to work with,” Dunning wrote on his 50th anniversary last year. “I celebrate the many people, places and issues this job has exposed me to over all these years. And most of all, I celebrate getting to live in a town I love and raise my family here.”
That love will be reciprocated when Davis honors Dunning with an online celebration, a socially distanced vehicle parade and the presentation of the first Bob Dunning Scholarship this June. Fundraising has begun to endow the scholarship, which will be awarded annually to a graduating senior of a high school in the Davis school district who is considering a career in journalism.
The Davis Odd Fellows Lodge is handling the scholarship contributions, which may be tax-deductible. The EIN is 47-4578511 and the Charitable Trust number is CT0247740. Make checks payable to “Davis Odd Fellows Helping Hands Inc.” (and write “Celebrating Bob Dunning” on the memo line of your check). Mail contributions to Lea Rosenberg, Odd Fellows Lodge, 415 Second St., Davis, CA 95616. Donors who want a receipt for tax purposes should provide their email address.
Then, all of Davis is invited to be part of the fun by joining a virtual celebration on Friday, April 9, from 4 to 5 p.m. The Zoom event will be limited to the first 100 people to sign up, and the recording will be uploaded afterward on YouTube. Details will be forthcoming soon.
Two weeks later, on Saturday, April 24, the community can show Dunning some love by taking part in the vehicle parade. Again, details are to come.
