Davis June City Clowncil Meetings - End the 'Special Seats' for Political Exhibitionists!!!

14a19c60-e2a5-4da1-932b-b6d5db95f9b7June Davis City Council meetings were especially filled with clown-foolery.  Watch them online if you have nothing better to do.  I hope you have something better to do :-|

This post focuses on the clown-foolery of the 'special seats'.  Those visible to the camera during public comments.  Where political exhibitionists can be seen while others are speaking.  People in the *special seats* get special privileges that others in the audience do not.  Get there early, so you can make obnoxious facial expressions behind public speakers!  :-|

The City Council has a rule that there is no audience response to comments. No clapping, no boos. People violate this all the time (f*ck all of you who do).  Members of the public get two minutes to speak on any item.  This is their time.  But despite not allowing clapping or boos, people who sit behind speakers can display signs, make gestures, use puppetry, and make sneers and geers at the commenters in real time -- even fight for sign space with those with opposing signs!  A true clown show.  Or, literally, puppet show.

ON WHAT PLANET is this not reacting to what a commenter is saying?  --on steroids!!!  How is this not a thousand times worse than simple cheers and jeers? I started to complain about this to council maybe five years ago when two young women sat behind someone speaking and made obnoxious facial gestures and whispered to each other and laughed throughout the entire person's comment time, obviously in real-time mocking the commenter. Council did nothing.  Recently I've suggested background technology (such as Teams has) to blot-out anything behind the speaker.  Perhaps substituting the Davis clown-show with a background photo of a peaceful Japanese garden.

The anti-Beth Minooshions often post signs behind Beth when she speaks, sometimes using the infamous puppet extension of Anoosh's arm.  Awhile ago people snuck up behind a speaker to hold signs (that *was* stopped by council).  It got totally out of control at the previous CC June meeting (before the last one) when Beth starts jumping back and forth between cameras fighting to get on camera, with the two sides jockeying to get their signs in front of the other.  An issue of concern for the City is that the camera operator was clearly disfavoring Beth's signs. Beth has a way of suing government entities that show bias in allowing speech.  Don't know if this is as cut and dry as the library case, but even the appearance of bias is a dangerous thing.  To taxpayers.

I looked at the video where I sang "Committee Rise, Committee Set".  My performance, mourning lost committees, was totally ruined by the clown show in the background. There's a code amongst gangs -- at least some gangs -- you don't target those who aren't in the game. And there is code among most graffiti 'artists', that you don't tag over art. Both Beth and the Minooshions have no respect for other people's two minutes, acting like sparring seven-year-olds behind the person speaking. I and others weren't even speaking on rainbow-crosswalk related issues. Don't tag over my art, and don't conduct your clown show behind those who are not in your game

From my observations, Anoosh and Beth literally hate each other. Like I haven't seen such loathing between two semi-public Davis peoples since Greenwald vs. Asmundson. I rather dislike both of them myself, so I understand how each of them feel. Perhaps an old-fashioned duel in Central Park would be good for the City of Davis. Especially if the result were a tie  :-|

(Note:  Alan C. Miller does not condone or promote actual duels or violence of any kind.  This is a metaphor :-| )

Disembodied voice: "Hey Alan, nice job. Now both Anoosh's and Beth's followers dislike you".

Alan: "Hey disembodied voice: Yes, that's the idea. Maybe I'll get all four of my tires slashed, two from-and-on each side of my Volvo. Note to slashers: I don't drive a Volvo  :-| "

(Note:  Alan C. Miller does not condone or promote actual tire slashings or vandalism of any kind.  This is a metaphor.  I hope  :-| )

A BETH BOURNE'S FACEBOOK PAGE SPECIAL REPORT

I'm not on social media.  I believe it's evil.

And I don't know anyone named Jeremy Taylor (JT). But he said stuff on Facebook. So I'll address said stuff:

JT say:  Alan had a temper tantrum at the podium last night

Definition, Temper Tantrum: "a violent outburst of anger commonly occurring between the ages of 2 and 4 and involving such behavior as screaming, kicking, biting, hitting, and head banging. The episodes are usually out of proportion to immediate provocation and sometimes regarded as an expression of accumulated tensions and frustrations."

Ok, that's fair. I'll try to be less bitey next time.

But seriously, I was hamming it up.  I knew I'd be on Beth Young Bourne's Facebook channel within 24 hours, so why not add some DRAYMA!!!   I know BYB thrives on drama, so I gave her a gift. Why? So that my message would get out to her gentle readers, whether some like it or not. And clearly JT does not.

Mostly I was reacting to the antics of the previous week behind my "Committee Rise, Committee Set" song.  Antics behind me that I was unaware of at the time; but as BYB was the one carrying on behind me this week, she got my pointy finger. Ironically, I was actually addressing the council while not looking at the council, even as they admonished me to address the council. And yes I was on this occasion going outside the chamber rules that I so gloriously defend. No apology, just admitting I did that. Purposefully.  Because the council's rules violate the council's rules -- again making my point.

JT say:  Ron Anoosh loves to do it also

As I stated at the time with my pointy finger. Doesn't matter if it's Beth or Anoosh. Beth was behind me this week as I saw beforehand what she was doing -- so she got the pointy.

JT say:  Ron Alan needs to stop being a white knight.

First of all, I'm Jewish, not 'white'. We Jews are an ethnicity you know. And if you don't know, ask two Jews. You'll get at least three different opinions on that. So at least if you're going to accuse me of knightiness, call me a Jewish Knight.

Definition -- white knight: a person or thing that comes to someone's aid.

Nope. A narcissistic, self-obsessed person is incapable of coming to someone else's aid. It was all about me.

Definition -- Jewish knight: a person or thing that comes to someone's aid, and then makes them feel guilty about it. #Pa-dum-pum#

JT say:  He’s inserting himself into things he doesn’t need to.

I can insert myself into whatever I wish, as long as it's consensual.

But seriously, who 'needs' to do anything that is spoken of during City Council comments? No one. So what's your *point* ?

JT say:  Him calling out other public commenters the way he is, is bizarre.

Calling out what public commenters? I wasn't calling out Beth's comments. Never have. I supported Beth suing the library. Not in support of many of BYB's views and especially not how she presents them, but rather for the fact that the librarian was totally out of line shutting down the speaker and the event as a government employee. I even offered to give testimony on something I witnessed, but the matter was settled so fast that didn't happen. Nothing against the trans community or their allies -- I totally support their right to protest outside at the library and I like rainbow crosswalks -- my issue is:  everyone's right to speak and protest nonviolently. The one-time I was at the library for a BYB band gig, the counter-protest outside was peaceful and they got their message across.

As for 'bizarre' ? . . . guilty, as charged.

B154579a-2d43-4c2a-9e90-2003b316f9c7JT say:  Ron 1) it’s allowed

"It" is not allowed . . . -ish. As when "it" reaches a certain point, the not-well-defined "it" is shut down, or the camera angle is changed. What I've been trying to point out to council is the signs in that background real estate violate their own rule on not commenting and reacting, and they need to nip this in the bid, as once the monster's foot is in the door, the monster is getting inside -- witness the last two meetings.

JT say:  2) it’s not his fight

It's not yours to define what is my fight. But in a way you are correct, in that I'll leave that fight up to Beth and Anoosh and their followers. I'm more of a transportation guy, and a stick-it-to-the-council-when-they-in-my-opinion-screw-up guy. But that was my point: don't fight behind me with signs when I'm speaking about my stuff.

JT say:  3) he calls out other public commenters for unrelated things. This is not just him calling out Beth.

Of what 'other' public commenters are you speaking of? As I said before, I was calling out BYB not as a public commenter, but as a person disrespecting my two minutes by holding up a sign about her obsession topic, and then going through signs like giant flash cards. So who else are you talking about that I 'called out' ? I'm not saying I didn't, but you give no details, just accusations, and I doubt anyone else knows what you are referring to either. So, who else? Names! Specifics! Then I'll confirm or deny and comment back at'cha.  (You are always welcome to post at Al's Corner.  Nothing will be deleted without posting a reason that sites written Al's Corner policy.)

And on a related note: why do you, JT, have a stick up your arse about me?

BYB say:  Ols Keith yes, that's my point. If others are allowed to have their signs showing behind the speakers that are pushing transgenderism, why can't I have signs that are questioning it?

Ironically, I think BYB and I are making the same general point, if from opposite poles. Bdf818b1-5d4f-41b2-9a7f-8cc1219eaa6c

I wish the Davisite could just give clear and succinct information about important issues and what our City Council is doing/have done, who they are and what they stand for.
This piece is ridiculously over-long and performative. I gave up scrolling to find any information about any actual issue.

I would like to participate more in local politics and hoped the Davisite would help inform me, but I find it increasingly annoying - badly written and lacking in basic information.

Ron O

Just to reiterate, I agree with Alan that the council needs to do something about this. Perhaps by using the "background technology" that Alan referred to. (During Zoom meetings, I've often felt "jealous" regarding the fake backgrounds that some use - by imagining that they're actually there.)

I'm not sure what fake background would be appropriate for a council meeting - perhaps something like the clown image shown in this article? (Hey, I just realized that different images could be used depending upon the council's view of the speaker.) :-)

Ron O

Victoria: If you "read-through" Alan's comment, you'll see that he's actually addressing a somewhat serious issue.

I (personally) find it easy to read Alan's articles, due to the humor interspersed throughout.

As "they say", one can always write an article oneself - even if it's just asking questions to which others can respond. For the most part, I think that others would respond positively on here.

VW say: "I wish the Davisite could just give clear and succinct information about important issues and what our City Council is doing/have done, who they are and what they stand for."

They have a profession for that: reporter. Not enough people seem to be willing to fund those anymore, but check out the Davis Enterprise. As for the Davisite, no one here gets paid. Except in verbal lashings.

VW say: "This piece is ridiculously over-long and performative."

True, as are all my pieces. I am here as an author (#cough #cough) at the Davisite because I gave up my old gig writing ridiculously over-long and performative comments in the Davis Vanguard when I committed commenticide there in protest of their increasingly-strangulative censhorship policies.

VW say: "I gave up scrolling to find any information about any actual issue."

The actual issue was allowing people to show up and essentially comment in real time behind the commenter, on the issue they were speaking about, or not, and how that violates the council's policy of not allowing cheers and jeers, in order to make commenters feel comfortable. There you go, a ridiculously over-long and performative blog article distilled down to one sentence :-|

DW say: "I would like to participate more in local politics"

Please do! Davis needs more participators! One word of warning, though. If you show up enough, and don't share their beliefs, they call you a 'usual suspect' and tell you that you don't represent anyone but the 100 or so people who participate in local politics, and the people that really matter and have a voice are those that don't participate -- and *they* know what those people think . . . and, of course: "thank you for your comment".

DW say: " . . . and hoped the Davisite would help inform me"

I have a suggestion: Why don't you instead inform Davis by becoming a reporter for the Davisite! I can attest to the fact that the pay and benefits are non-existent! But since you seem to think that volunteers with no job description who post whatever the hell they want should inform you -- why don't you instead inform all of us, for free!?!!!??? Then the Davisite would become exactly what you want it to be, and, as a bonus, you wouldn't get any compensation.

DW say: " . . . but I find it increasingly annoying. . . "

Thank you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnepRTwcWh0

DW say " . . . - badly written . . . "

Ouch!

DW say: ". . . and lacking in basic information."

Oh it's there, you just have to scroll all the way through the ridiculously over-long and performative blog posts :-|

I started to read Victoria's post but I "found it increasingly annoying - badly written and lacking in basic information"...

SOD say: "I started to read Victoria's post but I "found it increasingly annoying - badly written and lacking in basic information"..."

I will neither confirm nor deny that this made me laugh out inappropriately loud in a public setting

Thanks for making my day, SOD ;-)

Elisabeth Bourne

This is a great commentary Alan. I'm sorry if I was disrespectful to you during your pubic comment period. This was not my intentions.

My point that I was trying to make at the city council meeting is that only one viewpoint is promoted and celebrated in this town - using government resources including the angle of the camera man and the way Mayor Chapman runs his meetings.

Gloria Partida's Phoenix Coalition (and Davis "Queer Teen" Group) gets so much favoritism and taxpayer funds it's unreal. Why not support Moms for Liberty, Yolo County the same way??

Alan C. Miller

BYB: I know that wasn't your intention. My point is nobody should be disrespecting speakers by putting signs, puppets or obnoxious facial expressions behind the speaker. The practice of persons hoarding the *special seats* to mock persons commenting didn't start during this council's tenure, but this council is going to end it.

South of Davis

Beth wrote:

I have a better idea, why doesn't the the city just "run the city" and let private individuals support Mom's for Liberty and the Phoenix Coalition (and anything else that does not have to do with running the city).

The city does not have enough money to fund EVERY group or enough crosswalks to let EVERY group paint them and if we pick just "some" groups to favor it will get other groups and we will have a mess like in Iowa where they tried (and failed) to make EVERYONE happy):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6D0BhXtMs0

P.S. I bet the conservative "clown world" people are going to go nuts when they see actual clowns at the city council meeting in a blue city...

Alan C. Miller

SOD say: "I have a better idea, why doesn't the the city just "run the city" and let private individuals support Mom's for Liberty and the Phoenix Coalition (and anything else that does not have to do with running the city). "

I couldn't agree more.

But if we raise the sales tax 1%, we can continue to fund things that have nothing to do with running the city :-|

So there's that . . .

South of Davis

Alan wrote:

The city might be able to push through the sales tax (that they will spend mostly giving themselves raises) by telling Mom's for Liberty that they will put a Trump statue next to the Gandhi statue and tell the Phoenix Coalition that they will spend some of the money on a Harvey Milk statue next to the Gandhi statue. Maybe we can finally beat Berkeley with something and pass a total ban of plastic water bottles and paper coffee cups (since if you "follow the science" you know that if a town of ~60K people makes a change it will change the "global climate" since the actions of 60K people has a huge impact on a planet with ~8 billion people (only a "science denier" would think that the actions of less than 1/100th of 1% of the population would not change the "global climate").

Colin Walsh

I think the main result of the Beth/Anoosh feud at council meetings is it discourages others from being involved or going to council meetings. the same is true online between Beth and other commenters on City posts. they go at each other and no one is convincing anyone of anything - but it sucks the oxygen out of the room and makes it harder to talk about city issues the council is actually (or should be) addressing.

Alan C. Miller

If it's sucking the oxygen out of the room, go outside.

Rachel

Jesus Alan, you say you want discussions without moderation like DG, ostensibly because you want all voices heard - but when people are telling you precisely why more people don't participate, you say to go outside???

Alan C. Miller

R say: "Jesus Alan"

I thank you for equating the two of us. I'll take that as a compliment. Especially because we are both Jewish.

R say: ", you say you want discussions without moderation like DG,"

I still haven't moderated anyone, sans one person who repeatedly violated the written policies of Al's Corner. And even then only omitted words, not whole posts. But here again, a comment criticizing me and adding nothing to the discussion, whatever the discussion is/was. I'm sensing a pattern here.

R say: "ostensibly because you want all voices heard"

I never said that. I said I want no voices squelched. It would impossible for all voices to be heard, since 99% of people are wise enough not to participate in local politics beyond sticking their head up every few years to vote.

R say: " - but when people are telling you precisely why more people don't participate, you say to go outside???"

I have no idea why anyone *doesn't* do something, especially considering what they are doing is literally nothing. Heck, I don't even know why people *do* do something. And yes, I said do do.

But who said precisely why more people don't participate? I heard one person's opinion about the destructive influence of two particular people and their followers, and then made a stupid joke based on the metaphor they used. Did you think I was literally telling people to go outside?

Jesus Rachel

And you can equate the two of you and take that as a compliment if you wish. But only if you're Jewish. Otherwise that would be cultural appropriation, or stolen savior syndrome.

Keith

"If it's sucking the oxygen out of the room, go outside."

Geez Alan, I'm so offended... LMAO

Ron O

One thing about being Jesus - you get to say whatever you want.

Then again, some apparently had an "issue" with that guy. But he got the final word, anyway - essentially the old-world version of the Terminator.

Hell (sorry to use that word), but the "god-damn" beginning of the calendar itself was created for that guy. (Just don't tell Buddha.)
