Amy Westervelt is an internationally acclaimed independent investigative climate journalist (and Northern California native) who has reported on the causes of the climate crisis for over 15 years. She founded the popular ’true crime’ podcast called ‘drilled’ that focuses on the decades of disinformation by the fossil fuel industry, including how Big Oil is successfully promoting false climate solutions such as Carbon Capture to delay the rapid transition to renewables. Amy has contributed to The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, the New York Times and many other venues and has received multiple awards and nominations for her investigative climate reporting.
Steven Donziger is a human rights lawyer who successfully litigated an 18 billion dollar lawsuit against Chevron on behalf of 30,000 local and indigenous people in Ecuador whose homes and lands have suffered from a 16 million gallon crude oil spill. To avoid paying out the largest judgement ever awarded in an environmental lawsuit, Chevron moved its assets out of Ecuador and succeeded in using US courts to prosecute and convict Donziger who served jail time and over 800 days of home detention under a judicial maneuver that has been widely condemned. To this day, Chevron has neither paid the damages it owes nor started the cleanup of the massive environmental damage it has perpetrated in Ecuador.
Geoffrey Supran co-published a landmark 2023 Science paper that detailed how fossil fuel companies accurately predicted decades ago that burning fossil fuels would lead to dramatic global warming with catastrophic consequences for people and the environment. Yet fossil fuel companies continued the extraction of fossil fuels for their profit while causing irreparable harm to our climate; consequences that are inflicted deeply inequitably. Dr. Supran recently testified for the bicameral hearings on Capitol Hill led by Representative Jamie Raskin (Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability) and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee) focused on ‘Big Oil’s Campaign of Climate Denial, Disinformation, and Doublespeak’.
