This Doubling of the Local Sales Tax - It's All a Lie! - Vote NO on Measure Q! ---------- [Al's Corner - November '24]
November 02, 2024
Today's article is a video against Measure Q. This was going to be my testimony before the Davis City Council, but they didn't meet last week. Or the week before that. Or next week. What do they think this is, summer break?
Here's the three-minute video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2mXBTMCgRo
Of course, as always at Al's Corner, other subjects welcome! ;-)
Davis Citizen (sung to the tune of "Witchita Lineman" by Glen Campbell)
I am a citizen of Davis
And I bike the main roads
Searching in the street for another pah-ah-ot hole
I hear far-lefties call “more taxes!”
I can hear the fire fighters whine
They say the City budget
Is still on the line!
You say we have to save the planet
Cuz it don't look like rain
And the more we subsidize housing
The more the budget won't stand the strain
You say you need Q more than want Q
And you need Q for for all time
But this doubling of the local sales tax
Is all a lie!
Vote NO on Measure Q, Mildred!
(Original Glen Campbell version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8P_xTBpAcY )
They certainly would have shut you down precisely at the 3 minute mark if not before, like maybe making it a 2 min. limit.
Posted by: Donna Lemongelllo | November 02, 2024 at 10:07 PM
They shut us all down at the two-minute mark. Except occasionally when they don't, usually with someone they like, or when a UCD 'middle east expert' drones on and on about the 'truth' and Will Arnold let her go on, as the last public speaker, for an extra couple of minutes. No bias there :-|
There was so much freedom in having that extra minute in my own private council chamber, and then pushing it 15 seconds while the gavel bangs.

This is the best part:
You say you need Q more than want Q
And you need Q for for all time
But you got a bit distracted/off topic at the end of your video...
Posted by: Roberta L. Millstein | November 03, 2024 at 08:10 AM
How about something sang to John Lennon's Revolution?
"You say you want a stable city, wellll, you know . . . we'd all love to see the plan".
"But if you go carryin' pictures of . . .?"
(Regardless) "It's goin' to be all-right". (Or, all-left.)

RM say: "But you got a bit distracted/off topic at the end of your video..."
Well we can't have that . . .
. . . I cut it back a bit.

"I cut it back a bit."
I think that's better. Most voters don't align on all the same issues and there's no point in turning off someone who might agree with you on this but disagree with you on something else.

Vote no on Q.
And since you're voting anyway might as well vote for Trump too.

Controversial, KO, controversial, in a place like Davis.

"Controversial, KO, controversial, in a place like Davis."
Well I figured if the Davisite allows entire articles where voting for Kamala is pushed the least they could do is allow my tiny little vote for Trump comment.

"Allow" ? What do you think this is, the Davis Vanguard?

Most voters don't align on all the same issues and there's no point in turning off someone who might agree with you on this but disagree with you on something else.
Ideally, that should never even be a consideration - nor should it impact any personal relationship.
If it does, that's usually a reflection of the person who is "turned off". In other words, they're fragile (among other possible descriptors).

No, that would be "White Fragility" over there.

Funny, DG years ago suggested that a bunch of us read that book.
Posted by: Alan C. Miller | November 05, 2024 at 01:45 PM
Regarding the author of White Fragility, Matt Walsh made her look like a complete fool. But probably not from the perspective of someone like that author, had it not been a ploy.
https://www.nationalreview.com/news/robin-diangelo-addresses-humiliating-matt-walsh-movie-i-had-been-played/
But my comment was actually intended to address all forms of political "fragility". For example, those who think the use of insults (whose views they don't like) is a form of debate.

I think we have an answer now, regarding whether or not those trips to drum-up support for Harris in Nevada helped. Though I respect the effort.
Personally, I find it difficult to get worked up about presidential races. I've also never fully understood the apparent deep-seated hatred against Trump.
Seems to me that Bush/Cheney caused a lot more damage than Trump ever did. In light of that, I'm failing to see how support from both of the Cheneys was something for Harris to celebrate. The rift between Cheney and Trump seemed more personal, than political.

“You know, every election cycle we talk about this is the most election of our lifetime. Lawrence, this one is. I have been fortunate and blessed during the course of being vice president to have many situations where it becomes clear to me that there are — you know, people of every age and gender, by the way, who see something about being the first that lets them know they don’t need to be limited by other people’s limited understanding of who can do what.”

My take is the extreme left are too loud and went too far, and the moderate left were too afraid to take them on and denounce them. Trump on the other hand, challenged the extremists of his party and 'trumped' them, showing leadership and political skill.
And this certainly explains all the defeats of Davis-Vanguard-supported initiatives and people, in one of the bluest states. The era is over, extreme leftism failed because sufficient moderate lefties were turned off by it and were willing to stomach the massive flaws of Trump and defeat all the 'decarceration' bills and candidates.
Clue DG: when you keep gaslighting people and telling them crime is down, when they can see with their own eyes crime is up; and when you try to mask a huge meth/fentanyl problem as 'homelessness' and go about the problem all wrong and waste tens of billions of dollars, people say: "f*ck this". Like, hey DG, if you'd come to us and said conditions in jails are inhuman, and we need to root out bad cops who are a problem, I'd have been right there with you -- but no, you went with 'decarceration' and 'defund the police'. And just enough people nationally stomached the orange turd, and Californians finally had enough of the results of your gaslighting decarceration BS that they rejected it all outright. So, maybe it's time to give up and go sell oranges at a truck stop outside of Reno.

From today's "Davis Waaaaaaaah-nguard":
"However, progressives lamented the outcome. The Young Women’s Freedom Center noted that Prop 36 was “was a deceptively named ballot measure that employed the threat of incarceration as a deterrent against retail theft “
Also deceptive: telling people crime is down when it isn't, and pouring tens of billions into California 'homelessness' has produced more California 'homeless'. People don't believe the progressives' deception more than they don't believe the 'deceptively named ballot measure'.
I'm actually not sure Prop. 36 is the right answer, and think y'all have some points about how things are handled in the justice system. But when you gaslight me and as Judge Judy's tagline goes, "piss on my boots and tell me it's raining" I'm not inclined to support or work with you on change, and instead see the only way to send a message that your approach is extremist sh*t is to vote for initiatives like Prop. 36.

Trump is flawed, I actually like JD Vance better. But I'll still take Trump's policies over another 4 years of what we're seeing now. So Trump for the next 4 years then 8 years of Vance.
Democrats tried to lie about the border, but we all saw it.
Democrats tried to tell us biological men can be women, but we saw what crap that was too.
We also saw everyday how much a bag of groceries was costing us.
We all saw how Democrats were using lawfare to go after Trump.
We saw Trump dodge two assassination attempts.
So these things more than TRUMPED the abortion issue.
Only fools bought into the dictator, Nazi, fascist bullshit.
Posted by: Keith | November 06, 2024 at 08:55 AM
I also believe the choice of Waltz was awful. He started strong and then sputtered over the airport for the remainder. Shapiro would have been a much stronger choice, and they almost certainly would have carried PA if they had. Also wouldn't have alienated many Jews who saw that as a slap in the face since many speculated Harris was concerned with blowback from the antizionist progressives of the party. Trump on the other hand convinced the GOP to go moderate and mainstream on abortion, instead of cow-towing to their extremists.
Hopefully, this'll show the Democrats that having confusing stances, weakly supporting those in the press, picking people by identity instead of skill, and showing a generally flaccid approach, DOES NOT WORK.
I want the system to start churning out two good candidates in the future instead of two pathetic pieces of carp. Don't blame me, I voted for Rob Roy!
Posted by: Alan C. Miller | November 06, 2024 at 09:03 AM
What's amazing is Trump won the popular vote despite the media being 85-90% against him. Democrats are big losers in this election, but the media might be an even bigger loser. Mainstream media can no longer be trusted, the people see that too and weren't persuaded by their obvious bias. At least Bezos sees the writing on the wall and is willing to now make changes.
Posted by: Keith | November 06, 2024 at 09:15 AM
Agree with what you said at 9:15, KO. Amazing Trump won the popular vote, I never expected that. And Dem Party and Media need a complete shutdown and reset. I thought when Trump won in 2016 they'd both get it and see that indeed they were their own worst enemy. I actually though in 2016 they'd self-reflect and see that taking extremist positions only pisses people off and causes a backlash, as it has been throughout history. But instead they went ape-S and doubled down -- nice job far-lefties, you got us Trump again -- and this time I don't believe there is going to be introspection, just more extremism. KO says he regained faith, but I have only lost it further. I do want a strong and sane Democratic Party again -- actually what I really want is choice voting and strong third parties. And Rob Roy for President.

"Oh, and Measure Q won, which means those of us who pay attention to local politics are irrelevant, because the stupid people of Davis ultimately "win".
I never understand why the sheep are always so ready to pay more taxes. When do they get to the point where they say enough is enough? Until they do say no they will continue getting fleeced.
"I also believe the choice of Waltz was awful."
Walz was awful, he came across as clownish.
He acted like he was a hunter but couldn't load a shotgun while on video. Then he was a football coach who while playing Madden Football with AOC had no idea what a "pick six" is. He reminded me of Dukakis and the tank helmet.
Think how bad Kamala/Walz would've lost if we had a fair media?
Posted by: Keith | November 06, 2024 at 09:47 AM
I have to laugh that several of the so-called pundits today are trying to say that Kamala lost because the Bro's were racist and misogynistic and couldn't vote for a black woman.
Did it ever occur to them that maybe Kamala was just a terrible candidate?

Batya Ungar-Sargon, a right-leaning Jewish woman journalist, said last night on The Free Press that Trump will tell BB that he has a limited time, like a month, to wrap things up and end the war, because Trump doesn't like war. I have no ability to predict if such a thing is possible, but can imagine how Democracy Now's head will explode if Trump end up ending a war that Harris/Biden could not?
Posted by: Alan C. Miller | November 06, 2024 at 11:57 AM
Another reason for the loss was inflation. Maybe most. I've actually had people tell me that the massive massive debt/spending by Biden doesn't cause inflation. Another example of "FU stop gaslighting me" self-destructive arguing. Or utter inability/unwillingness to understand economics.

RMc say: "The sales tax measure in Woodland, Measure U, is failing 45%-55%"
So, more people are going to burn more gas to travel to buy stuff. It's the "Davis Way".
Wasn't David saying something like, "hey - Woodland's got a proposed tax increase as well, so it will all even-out"?
I've got a new motto for Woodland: "We'll take Davis' businesses, and send our money-sucking kids to Davis schools". (Looks like Woodland's proposed parcel tax to fix their crumbling schools is also going down to defeat.)
Though truth be told, an average consumer is not going to drive to Woodland to save a few cents on sales tax. They go there to shop at CostCo (and to a lesser extent - other businesses).
The "CostCo Highway" is pretty busy these days, mostly with drivers waiting to get on I-5 on some afternoons. Traffic backed up for a couple of miles or so.
I can hardly wait to see what happens if Davis approves Covell Village ACT II.

That sounds plausible. Though I hope BB takes out Iran's nukes before he ends it.
I'll also bet that Trump finds a way to end the Ukraine/Russia/N Korea war too.
Liberal heads will spin.

Some concession speech by Kamala. She's talking like she's still on the campaign trail. She needs to face it, she lost and she was a terrible candidate that got whipped by a better opponent.
Posted by: Keith | November 06, 2024 at 01:36 PM
KO, comes across to me more like a Grade B high-school valedictorian speech. I did laugh at that clear dig at Trump about the peaceful transfer of power.
Wasn't that impressed with Trump's speech either. Just sort of rambling and nothing too inspiring. It was cool how he let some of his team come up and speak, some obviously not expecting it. Though it also felt like he wasn't prepared with a speech so just turned it over to others to fill in the time.

David, from today's Vanguard (in regard to the "Tough Night for Criminal Justice Reform" article):
At the end of the day, videos mattered more than raw data.
That argument could certainly be made regarding some of the videos of police actions (e.g., providing a skewed view).
And even when there are videos, interpretations are subjective. We saw that locally in regard to the infamous "picnic day" event. I can tell you what I saw, but it's not going to support any particular agenda.
I say, film/video everything. Most times, those without extreme agendas will pretty much see reality. Those with agendas will continue to exist with, or without videos.

The following election result might be the significant obstacle in regard to ANY city housing element being realized, regardless of how many threats emanate from YIMBY interests:
Prop. 5 (Affordable housing)
Voters opposed a bid to make it easier to pass tax-related bonds, lowering the threshold for approval from 66% to 55%, according to tallies released Wednesday.

The rich stuck up people with multiple degrees that don't know their cleaning ladies or gardeners names look at open borders as a way to get a cheaper cleaning ladies and gardeners and would be shocked that most Trump voters know someone that lost their job to an illegal alein that would do the job for less.

We all saw the dude that changed his name to "Lia" Thomas smoke Riley Gaines and lots of other women that have been training in the pool before school for years.

The super rich Democrats don't shop anymore (they hire people to do it) and I would bet $100 that not a single one of my wife's Ivy League classmates could tell me what a pound of butter costs (or know that Walmart sells Challenge butter for more than a $1 less per pound than any Davis groery store)

I just read that the cases going forward are ending as the people that turned "30+ minor accounting errors that 20 left leaning prosucutors passed on as trivial" into "MORE THAN 30 FELONY CONVICTIONS" are all worried they won't get to keep their jobs.
> So these things more than TRUMPED the abortion issue.
Everyone with an IQ above 70 knows that CA is not going to ban abortion even if Jerry Falwell or another right wing preacher becomes president and anyone that really wants an abortion and has an IQ above 70 can do the math on raising a kid for 18 years vs paying for a Southwest flight to CA and will fly to CA (or another liberal state) to get an abortion.
P.S. Yesterday was the first time in years I herd NPR use the term "Latino" (after reporting that "Latinos" pretty much all hate it when rich white ladies with advanced degrees tell they they are "Latinx" - after telling them some strange "pronouns" that they have never hears before)...

"most Trump voters know someone that lost their job to an illegal alien"
SOD, an overwhelmingly Latino county in Texas voted GOP for the first time since 1892. That shows how much the immigration issue played in the election. Democrats and the press don't get it.

I was in south Texas earlier this year for the eclipse, in a small Texas Hill's town an hour's drive from the border. Near our campground was a small Mexican restaurant run by three Mexican women. It had no sign, it was not listed on Google, they just put out an open-sign and an A-frame when they were open. Inside were Trump signs all over the walls, and a hilarious "cash only: hidin' from Biden" sign. This place was clearly off the government grid and underground and paid no taxes to anyone. And I'm sure wasn't regulated by anyone for a health license (I did not get food poisoning).
Our entire camp of a few dozen people were almost exclusively Davis and Grass Valley / Nevada City liberals. They all loved this place and these women and had no arguments with them. I have no idea if these women were US citizens or not, but I'm guessing yes, and they were clearly conservative and I'm guessing Catholic. I talked with them a bit about politics when no one else was looking, and it was quite clear that this was a common persona of Latinos in this area.
Get out of your bubbles and your heads out of your arses and get to know real people, people, or you'll have Donald Trump Jr as our 48th President :-}
