Sutter Davis Hospital Farmers Market opens for the season

(From press release) The Sutter Davis Hospital Farmers Market is back for the season, celebrating its 13th year bringing farm-fresh produce and local foods to employees and visitors. The market is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays through Sept. 28.
Since 2010, the Sutter Davis Hospital Farmers Market has brought regional foods and produce to the hospital’s main entrance, 2000 Sutter Place in West Davis. Its soft opening was May 4.
Tammy Powers, chief administrative officer for Sutter Davis Hospital, said, “We know how greater access to nutritious foods can improve one’s overall health. Having fresh and wholesome options available right here on our campus makes healthy choices even easier and more convenient for the community.”
Farmers include Dillion Farms, with cherries, peaches, apricots, pluots, tomatoes and melons; The Peach Farm, with heirloom greenhouse tomatoes, specialty cucumbers and zucchini; Yañez Farms, with strawberries, potatoes, greens, zucchini, corn, cherry tomatoes and (later) melons. Sunflowers and Sage Herb Farm, with fresh herbs, flowers, succulents, soaps, scrubs and jewelry; PURE Honey, with 10 varieties of honey, including orange blossom and wildflower; and Copper Hill Olive Oil, with oils, balsamic vinaigrettes and soaps.
Packaged and to-go foods include Upper Crust Baking, with artisan breads, cookies, apple tarts and more; North African Passion, with authentic spreads and dips with specialty African breads; and The Buckhorn food truck, with tri-tip sandwiches, salads and ribs. At the Davis Farmers Market booth, find fair-trade market baskets, cookbooks, and CalFresh EBT.
Certified Farmers Markets contribute to community food security. The hospital’s market accepts EBT cards, WIC and Senior coupons. Shoppers with no cash on hand may purchase Market Dollars using debit or credit cards.
Farmers markets are just one way Sutter Health strives to make its communities healthier. One of Sutter Health’s goals is to provide food that conserves and renews natural resources, protects the ecosystem on which all life depends, and increases local community resources. Practice Greenhealth, a nonprofit for institutions in healthcare, is collaborating with Sutter Health to support sustainable, eco-friendly practices.
The Davis Farmers Market manages the markets at two Sutter hospitals as part of a partnership to promote good health. The additional location is at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, which operates from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays, year-round at 2825 Capitol Ave.
All year in downtown Davis, thousands gather each week to shop for what is grown, raised and made locally. Since 1976, the Davis Farmers Market has connected and supported communities, area agriculture, farmers and artisan food producers. It educates the public about nutrition, sustainable agriculture, and the local economic value of buying food and products directly from the producer.
The Davis Farmers Market’s signature markets are Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons/evenings in Central Park. It also manages farmers markets at UC Davis, Sutter Davis Hospital and Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento. Since 2000, its Davis Farm to School program has supported the Davis Joint Unified School District, providing farm- and garden-based education, increasing farm-fresh foods in school meals, and reducing solid waste through recycling and composting.
